Carson Wentz's first pass attempt was dropped by Jordan Matthews. He made four more passes on his first drive of the season, the last one finding Matthews again, this time for a completion in the endzone.
It was a perfect start to the Eagles season.
The first game was far from perfect, but Wentz and the Eagles remained persistent in a 29-10 win over the Cleveland Browns in Week 1 on Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field.
Scoring Summary
1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | T | |
Browns | 0 | 7 | 3 | 0 | 10 |
Eagles | 7 | 6 | 9 | 7 | 29 |
Wentz opened the game going 4-for-5 on the first drive, complete with a 19-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Matthews.
The Eagles offense struggled to find the endzone from there, as Wentz started to face pressure. Caleb Sturgis missed a 46-yard field goal but connected on a 22-yard field goal in the second quarter to extend the Eagles lead to 10 early in the second quarter.
The Browns got on the board with a seven-play, 75-yard drive that featured completions of 16 and 44 yards from Robert Griffin III before Isaiah Crowell scored on the run from two yards out.
Sturgis added a late field goal from 38 yards off a Rodney McLeod interception to give the Eagles a six-point lead at the half.
The Browns needed just five plays and 1:03 to strike for a field goal to open the second half, a 35-yard connection for Patrick Murray.
After the Eagles were forced to punt on the next possession, the first play for the Browns was a bad snap over the head of Griffin that rolled out of the back of the endzone for a safety.
On the ensuing Eagles possession, Wentz led a nine-play, 73-yard drive that was capped with a 35-yard touchdown pass from Wentz to Nelson Agholor.
The Browns struggled to get anything going offensively in the fourth quarter, and after giving the Eagles a short field after a turnover on downs, the Eagles struck for the game's final score, a one-yard touchdown run for Ryan Mathews.
