Last Fall, we all watched our old buddy Shane Victorino celebrate a World Series with the Boston Red Sox. This year, the Red Sox are a mirror of the Phillies at 40-51, and in last in the AL East. They've had lots of injuries, including Victorino, and they just aren't going to contend in 2014. Knowing that, they're moving forward.
The Red Sox are prepared to DFA A.J. Pierzynski, a well established veteran catcher who is hitting .254 at a weak offensive position. They're doing so to make room for a younger catcher, Christian Vazquez. Boston will eat over $3.5 million as of now on this deal.
The Red Sox understand where they are for 2014. Chances are, this won't be their last move before the deadline. The Phillies don't maybe have as many young pieces ready to play right now, so their position is not identical, but it's worth noting that we're haggling over whether or not we'll trade our stars from a World Series team six years ago, and other aging stars. The Red Sox are purging veterans a year after a championship, with the same record as us.
