White Sox trounce Thompson, Phillies in series opener

Final: White Sox 9, Phillies 1  ❖  Attendance: 18,843

Chicago, IL - In their first visit to the South Side of Chicago since 2004, the Philadelphia Phillies had a night they'd like to forget, falling to a potent White Sox offense, 9-1.

The Phillies bats were non-exsistent for the second straight game and their pitching hasn't helped either. Over the last two games, they've been outscored 18-1. Freddy Galvis' solo homer in the seventh snapped a streak of 17.2 innings without a run for Philadelphia, dating back to the sixth inning on Saturday against the Cardinals. They went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position.

Meanwhile, rookie right-hander Jake Thompson struggled again in his fourth Major League start, surrendering seven runs in five innings to put his ERA at 9.78 on the season. He's allowed 21 earned runs on 22 hits while walking 13 and striking out 13 in 19.1 innings thus far in his first stint with the big league club. White Sox starter Carlos Rodon held the Phillies scoreless over 6.2 innings, putting together his fourth quality start in as many outings this month. He's 1-1 with a 1.46 ERA in August, spanning 24.2 innings.

The Phillies and White Sox conclude their brief two-game set on Wednesday night. Jerad Eickhoff will get the ball for Philalphia while Chicago will send struggling veteran righty James Shields to the mound.

WP: Carlos Rodon (4-8, 4.02 ERA)  ❖  LP: Jake Thompson (1-3, 9.78 ERA)

Adam Eaton led off the game with a triple and promptly scored on an RBI groundout from Tim Anderson in the next at-bat, giving Chicago an early 1-0 advantage. Jake Thompson induced an inning-ending double play after walking the next two batters to fend off the White Sox threat.

Eaton started the bottom half of the third off with a single. Tim Anderson drove him in again, this time with an RBI-triple, to extend the lead to 2-0. A Jose Abreu single plated Anderson from third made it 3-0 two batters later. Todd Frazier hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Melky Cabrera with one down in the inning after Justin Morneau grounded into a force out with the bases loaded.

Things got worse for Jake Thompson in the fifth. With one on and one out, Melky Cabrera walked. Jose Abreu followed with a two-run home run and Justin Morneau made it back-to-back with a solo blast of his own, making it a 7-0 White Sox lead. In the sixth, David Hernandez relieved Thompson and surrendered an RBI-single to Carlos Sanchez, scoring Avisail Garcia, who had doubled to lead off the inning. Melky Cabrera added on an RBI-double in the inning to make it a 9-0 lead for Chicago.

With two down in the seventh, Freddy Galvis his a solo homer, his 13th of the season, to put the Phillies on the board and snap a streak of 17.2 innings without scoring a run, dating back to the sixth inning Saturday night against the Cardinals.

Cameron Rupp doubled and Carlos Ruiz drew a walk to put runners on first and second in the ninth, but Freddy Galvis struck out to end the game.
