Who will be named the Phillies All-Star tonight?

Last night Major League Baseball released their list of All-Star starters.  As expected, no Phillies won the fan vote to serve as a starter.  But this All-Star game requires that one player from each team makes the All-Star team, so each fanbase has interest in the game.  While some may appear to be more likely with others, the picks are complicated by what positions are left to fill.

Here are some Phillies that have a chance.

1. Jonathan Papelbon – Most likely
Papelbon has been the subject of trade rumors all season, but he remains a member of the Philadelphia Phillies.   As a closer for the Phillies Papelbon has been perfect.  In 14 opportunities, Papelbon has 14 saves, along with a 1.70 ERA.   Thus, Papelbon is the most likely Phillie to make the team.

The only thing that could hurt Papelbon would be too many pitchers on the roster, and Papelbon's reputation.

2. Cole Hamels – Still possible
Hamels does not possess a stellar record.  With very little run support, Hamels possesses a 5-6 record.  Along with it is a 3.02 earned run average.  There are many starters with a lower earned run average.  But, Hamels has a big name and has put up some dominant starts this season.  If Bochy needs another pitcher, Hamels could be it.

3. Maikel Franco, Cesar Hernandez
Both are hitting just under .300 and have provided most of the Phillies offense in recent weeks.  Neither player started all season.  But, if National League manager Bruce Bochy finds himself stuck with enough pitchers but in need of an infielder, he may decide to take one of the Phillies young players.
