Wilmer Flores plays hero again as Mets defeat Phillies in extras

New York, NY – Yesterday, it was Wilmer Flores' three-run home run that gave the Mets the lead they needed to put the Phillies away. Today, Flores delivered again, this time with an RBI-single in extras to propel the Mets to a 5-4 win. After falling behind 3-0 early in the game, the Phillies battled back against Jacob deGrom and the Mets bullpen to take a one-run lead in the eighth. The Mets would tied things up before walking off in extras for the win.

The Mets took advantage of a shaky Jerome Williams in the third. After cruising through the first two frames, Williams ran into some trouble.  With runners on first and second and two out, Lucas Duda singled to center to score Curtis Granderson from second, giving the Mets a 1-0 advantage. Williams then walked Daniel Murphy before giving up a two-run single to Michael Cuddyer, extending New York's lead to 3-0.

Meanwhile, Jacob deGrom cruised through seven innings before the Phillies got to him. With one out in the eighth, Carlos Ruiz and pinch-hitter Cesar Hernandez hit back-to-back singles. That ended deGrom's night. Hansel Robles came into to the game and immediately surrendered a two-out triple to Revere and an RBI-single to Freddy Galvis, making it a 3-3 ball game. After a Chase Utley single moved Galvis over to third, Ryan Howard went down looking. Luckily, Maikel Franco smacked a two-out RBI-single through the hole to left field, plating Galvis to make it a 4-3 Phillies lead.

Ken Giles came in to pitch the eighth, but he walked the first batter he faced, Lucas Duda. Daniel Murphy followed with a double down the right field line, putting runners on second and third with none out. Giles got Michael Cuddyer to strike out, but Wilmer Flores tied the game with a sac fly to center field. Darrell Ceciliani grounded to very shallow third, but Maikel Franco made a spectacular barehanded play to get him at first, ending the inning.

The team's would go to the 10th inning and Wilmer Flores would be the hero again for the Mets. After hitting a go-ahead three-run homer yesterday, an RBI-single against Elvis Araujo plated the game-winning run for the Mets, sealing a 5-4 win.
