WJC Report: Finland captures gold, Provorov gets 2 assists as Russia takes silver

Flyers prospect Ivan Provorov was the center of attention. His quick shot through traffic with 6.9 seconds left in regulation of Tuesday's gold-medal game at the World Junior Championships in Helsinki, Finland was deflected in by Andrei Svetlakov to tie the game at three against host nation Finland.

Provorov had two assists for Russia, also setting up Vladislav Kamenev for a one-timer on the first goal of the game.

But in the overtime that followed, Provorov was on the ice as Kasperi Kapanen, son of former Flyer Sami Kapanen and Toronto Maple Leafs prospect, made a pair of dazzling moves and scored on a wraparound, giving Finland the gold medal with a 4-3 overtime win.

Provorov finished with two assists, took a third-period penalty that was killed off by Russia and finished with an even plus-minus for the game. In seven games, Provorov had eight points, all assists, and was a plus-2.

Radel Fazleev had two shots in the game and did not factor into any of the scoring. He finishing the tournament with one goal and two assists in seven games and finished as a plus-3.

Earlier in the day, the U.S. team rolled to an 8-3 win over Sweden to take the bronze. Flyers goalie prospect Felix Sandstrom was in goal, allowing all eight goals on 29 shots. Winger Oskar Lindblom had one assist, took three shots and was a minus-2.

The 2017 World Junior Championships will be held in Toronto and Montreal. Based on the results of the 2016 tournament, Russia, U.S. and Canada will all be part of the same group in group play.
