What is Euro 2024?
The UEFA European Football Championship is a major international soccer tournament organized by UEFA every four years, and Euro 2024 is the 17th edition. The competition pits top national teams from across Europe against each other in a fierce battle for continental supremacy.
Euro 2024 features 24 teams, with Georgia making its finals debut. Italy enters as the defending champions, having defeated England on penalties in a close encounter in a COVID-delayed tournament in 2021. Meanwhile, notable absentees from this year’s edition include Russia, Wales, and Sweden.
Road to the Finals
A total of 53 national teams entered the UEFA Euro 2024 qualifying round, which took place between March 2023 and March 2024. This qualifying process determined the 23 teams that joined the automatically qualified host nation, Germany, in Euro 2024.
The 53 national teams were split into 10 groups: seven groups of five teams each and three groups of six teams each. Within these groups, teams played in a home-and-away, round-robin format. The winners and runners-up from each group secured direct qualification for Euro 2024.
The remaining three spots in the finals were decided through playoffs. These playoffs featured twelve teams, selected based on their performance in the 2023-24 UEFA Nations League. The teams competed in three paths of four teams each, with the winner of each path qualifying for the European Championship.
The Euro 2024 Finals
The Euro 2024 journey begins with the group stage, where 24 teams are divided into six groups of four. Each team plays the others in the same group once, making up a total of 36 games. After all group-stage matches are completed, the top two teams from each group advance to the knockout stage.
Additionally, the four best third-placed teams will progress to the Round of 16, making a total of 16 teams moving forward. The third-placed teams are ranked based on the following criteria:
- Points obtained
- Goal difference
- Goals scored
- Number of wins
- Lower disciplinary points
- European qualifiers ranking
If two or more teams in a group finish with the same number of points, some tiebreakers are used to decide which team progresses. Below is the order in which the tiebreakers are applied:
- Most points gained in matches played between the tied teams.
- Higher goal difference in matches played between the tied teams.
- Most goals scored in matches played between the tied teams.
Further tiebreakers will be applied if the teams remain tied after these criteria.
Following the group phase, the Round of 16 games will commence with eight matches between the 16 qualifying teams. This is followed by the four-game quarterfinals leading up to the semifinals. The winners of the semifinals will compete in the highly-anticipated Euro 2024 Final on July 14.

When learning how to bet on Euro 2024, understanding how to read soccer betting odds is crucial. Typically, odds with a plus (+) sign represent the underdogs, while minus (-) odds indicate the favorites. This applies to both moneyline and spread wagers.
Moneyline Odds
To explain better, let’s consider BetOnline’s moneyline odds for the Euro 2024 opener between Germany and Scotland, as shown above. Germany has positive odds, meaning they are the favored team. If you bet $357 on this side and they win the game, you profit $100, resulting in a total return of $457.
On the other hand, Scotland’s negative odds indicate that Steve Clarke’s men are less fancied. If you wager $100 on the Scots and they win, you’ll receive a profit of $1,000, giving a total return of $1,100. Meanwhile, if you place $100 on a tie and both teams draw, you’ll earn a $460 profit.
Spread Odds
Spread betting, also known as handicap betting in soccer, works similarly to moneyline wagering. Germany’s plus odds mean they are favorites, while Scotland’s minus odds suggest that they are less likely to secure a win.
For your $100 bet on Germany to pay $100, Julian Nagelsmann’s men must win by more than 2 goals. A 2-goal win results in a half-win, half-push situation. On the flip side, for your Scotland wager to be successful, the team must either win, draw, or lose by less than 2 goals. A 2-goal loss also results in a half-push, half-loss scenario.
Implied Probability
In addition to representing the potential payout, Euro 2024 betting odds can also reflect the probability of an outcome occurring. This probability, known as implied probability, can be calculated using the formulas below.
Implied probability for positive odds = (100/Odds + 100) * 100
Implied probability for negative odds = (Odds/Odds + 100) * 100
For example, suppose England’s odds to win Euro 2024 on a sportsbook app is +330; you can easily determine the Englishmen’s probability of becoming champions using the positive odd formula.
England’s odds = +330
Implied probability = (100/330 + 100) * 100 = 23%
Therefore, according to this Euro 2024 betting app, England has a 23% chance of winning the Euro 2024 championship.
Popular Euro 2024 Betting Lines
To understand how to bet on Euro 2024, you should familiarize yourself with the most common Euro 2024 betting lines. Below are the popular markets to explore when wagering on this European soccer tournament.
Moneyline
3-way moneyline is the most straightforward market in Euro 2024 betting. It involves backing a team to win a particular match outright.
Spread betting
In spread betting, also known as handicap betting, you’re wagering on the margin of victory of a Euro 2024 match. You can stake on whether a team will win by more or fewer goals than the sportsbook’s specified margin.

Here, you’re predicting the number of goals a team scores in a match. You can back a team to score more or less than the number of goals set by the sportsbook.

Also called outright betting, futures involve placing wagers on outcomes that will be determined at a later date. For example, you can predict the Euro 2024 winner, group winners, or competition top scorer, even before the tournament commences.
Props
Prop bets, short for proposition bets, add an extra layer of excitement to Euro 2024 betting. Here, you’re not betting on scores, winners, or the number of goals scored.
You’re simply wagering on a series of specific events or performances within a game. Below are some player and team props to explore when Euro 2024 betting.
- Total Throw-ins: Over/Under 20.5
- Total Corners: Over/Under 12.5
- Will There Be Penalty Shootouts? Yes/No
- Player to Score First Goal
- Player to Assist

Parlay Betting
This involves combining multiple individual bets into a single wager. For your parlay to win, each of your selections must be successful. While parlays offer the potential for massive payouts, they can be difficult to win.
Live Betting
In Euro 2024 betting, live wagering means placing bets on a match while it is in progress. As the game develops, odds fluctuate constantly, offering opportunities to take advantage of in-game events to secure a winning wager.
Euro 2024 Betting Picks – Tournament Favorites
A total of 23 teams will vie for glory in Euro 2024, but only one will emerge as the champion. Which teams do sportsbooks and the public fancy to go all the way in the tournament? Which nations are in a stronger position to lift the European Championship trophy come July 14? Let’s take a look at the tournament favorites.
England
The Three Lions are considered huge favorites to win Euro 2024, thanks to a predicted line-up that blends young talents and experienced players. With rising stars like Phil Foden, Jude Bellingham, Kobbie Mainoo, and Cole Palmer, as well as veterans Kyle Walker and Harry Kane, England is expected to put up a strong title challenge.
England’s recent performances in major tournaments bolster their credentials. They reached the 2018 World Cup semi-finals and the finals of Euro 2020, showing their ability to perform at the highest level. Also, Southgate’s men maintained an unbeaten run in the Euro qualifiers, winning six and drawing two. With this strong form and talented squad, the Englishmen can make a serious bid for the European championship.
France
France has consistently delivered impressive performances and results in major tournaments over the past few years. They reached the finals of Euro 2016, won the 2018 World Cup, and clinched the 2021 Nations League title.
Most recently, at the 2022 World Cup final, the Blues competed in one of the greatest soccer games of all time, narrowly losing out to Argentina. These performances show their consistency, determination, and ability to compete at the highest level.
Germany
Indeed, Germany has been underwhelming in recent years, with disappointing performances in major tournaments. They were eliminated in the group stages of the 2022 World Cup and knocked out of Euro 2020 by England. Their record of only four wins in the previous twelve games highlights these struggles.
However, Nagelsmann’s men are in a good position to return to the top of European football in Euro 2024. The tournament is being held in Germany, so the Germans playing in front of their home crowd will be a huge advantage. We expect the German fans to provide their team with the energy and morale to challenge for the championship.
Euro 2024 Betting Picks – Plucky Underdogs
We’ve seen major upsets in the UEFA European Championship over the years like Greece’s surprising triumph at the 2004 Euros. Euro 2024 promises its own share of drama, with several low-profile nations looking to defy the odds. Let’s look at two teams capable of an underdog fairytale in this competition.
Turkey
In a Euro 2024 qualifying group featuring 2018 World Cup runners-up and 2022 World Cup third-place finisher Croatia, Turkey finished in first place. They secured five wins and only a single loss in eight qualification games, scoring fourteen goals. Also, they have a history of pulling off upsets, notably reaching the Euro 2008 semi-finals.
Furthermore, the Turkish team can boast a few top players in their tanks, like Hakan Calhanoglu, Merih Demiral, and youngster Arda Guler. While winning the Euro 2024 title might be a tall order, Vincenzo Montella’s men can certainly reach the competition’s latter stages while masterminding some giant-killing along the way.
Denmark
Having topped their Euro qualifying group with 22 points, securing seven wins from ten matches, Denmark is heading to Euro 2024 in high spirits. They boast top talents like Simon Kjaer, Kasper Schmeichel, Rasmus Hojlund, and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. And with the return of Christian Eriksen to the team, Denmark can be a force in this competition.
The Danes played out a wonderful Euro 2020 campaign, reaching the semi-finals before narrowly losing to England. With this experience under the belt, they will be looking to replicate and surpass last term’s exploits in Euro 2024. We expect Denmark to put up an unlikely title challenge this summer.
Euro 2024 Betting Tips – How to Make Money Betting on Soccer Games
While there are no guarantees for winning when wagering, the following Euro 2024 betting tips will help increase your chances of earning a profit.
1. Do Your Research
Before engaging in Euro 2024 betting, ensure you conduct extensive research on the players and teams in question. Ensure you check the competing teams’ recent form, injuries and suspensions, head-to-head records, and their manager’s playing tactics. This information can help you make informed bet selections.
For instance, if you are planning on placing a futures wager on the top goalscorer at the competition, make sure you know which players are taking penalties for their respective nations. If, for example, Bruno Fernandes was chosen by Portugal to be the first-choice spot-kick taker, Cristiano Ronaldo’s chances of winning the Golden Boot would drop significantly.
2. Understand Betting Markets
A good tip for improving your wagering skills is understanding the different bet options available at the best soccer betting sites. Knowledge of popular Euro 2024 betting markets, like moneyline, spread, total goals, futures, and more, can help you make the right bet picks.
3. Leverage Bonuses & Promotions
Top-rated sports betting sites provide a range of lucrative promotions to boost bettors’ bankroll. So, it’s wise to take advantage of these bonuses to earn extra funds and increase your potential payouts. Look out for welcome bonuses, free bets, and cashback offers at your favorite sportsbook. This is one of the smartest Euro 2024 betting tips.
4. Shop Around for the Best Odds
When choosing a Euro 2024 betting site, compare the varying odds provided by different sportsbooks. Choosing the most attractive odds will ensure you get the best value for your money.
5. Manage Your Bankroll
One of the most useful Euro 2024 betting tips is managing your bankroll effectively. Set a budget, spread your bets, avoid chasing losses, and set deposit limits. This will keep you from the dangers of problem gambling, ensuring you don’t spend more than you can afford to lose.
Best Euro 2024 Betting Strategies
Below, we’ll reveal Euro 2024 betting strategies to maximize your chances of success when wagering on the prestigious soccer competition.
Bet on Underdogs
The European Championships have seen numerous upsets over the years. Take, for instance, the 2004 edition of the tournament where underdog Latvia shocked the soccer world by holding powerhouse Germany to a goalless draw in the group stage. That same year, Greece stunned Portugal in the final, securing a narrow 1-0 victory to become European champions. Who could have predicted such a turn of events?
With the Euros seeing its fair share of twists and turns throughout history, it’s worth considering placing your bets on low-profile nations to upset their more established counterparts. Who knows? Your bet might just pay off, with underdogs typically commanding more lucrative odds.
Consider the Motivation Factor
When it comes to Euro 2024 betting, factoring in motivation can be crucial in making informed decisions. For example, if England wins their first two matches, head coach Gareth Southgate may opt to field a “weaker” lineup in the third group stage game. This could be to rest key players or experiment with new playing tactics.
Consider a scenario where England faces Slovenia in this third group stage match. While England may be perceived as the clear favorite, Slovenia, who are fighting for a spot in the Round of 16, could be brimming with motivation. In such a case, the scales may tip slightly in favor of Slovenia, who are seemingly underdogs.
Check the Team Balance
While some Euro 2024 nations may boast top talents from the biggest clubs around the world, the distribution of talent across different positions on the field may be imbalanced. A team might have an impressive attacking lineup but lack solidity in midfield to control matches. Despite their marquee names, these teams could struggle to make an impact in Euro 2024.
Therefore, before betting on a nation, it’s wise to check that the team is well-balanced across all areas of the pitch. This is a smart strategy for betting on Euro 2024.
